Selling a company email archive after closure

Independent and sourced. We feature companies that pay us a referral fee. Our scores and reviews don't change for it. How we earn

Your company has closed, but its mail server or Google Workspace is still there. Before you sell that email archive, find out three things: how big it is, who controls it now, and which buyers take email at all. The largest reported example sits in Spirit Airlines' bankruptcy, where filings describe about 100M emails spread across 80,000 accounts.1

Scale

What a very large email archive looks like

Spirit's mail sits beside employee records reaching back to August 1986, 175,658 of them by the filing's count. Few companies have anything close to that. What matters for a smaller seller is the shape: years of threads between named teams, attached documents, and decisions written down as they happened.1

In the court auction for Spirit's internal data, Google emerged as successful bidder at $10.0M. That deal still needed the court: it was unapproved in mid-October 2026, with the hearing now fixed for 2026-11-06.2,3

Spirit data auction

Virtual auction of about two and a half hours on 2026-08-14, run by Davis Polk and PJT Partners. Google opened at $5.0M and won at $10.0M cash; Mercor is the alternate bidder at $7.5M

Google's winning bid is double its opening bid (10.0 / 5.0 = 2.0x). Mercor's alternate bid is 75% of Google's price (7.5 / 10.0).

Sources differ: The auction notice dates the auction 2026-08-14; the ombudsman's report says 2026-08-13.

History

Corporate email has been studied before

The Enron corpus holds about 0.5M messages from about 150 users, mostly senior management. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission posted it to the web during its investigation, and the current research version is dated 2015-05-07. The difference now is that companies, not regulators, decide when mail leaves the building, and buyers pay for it.4

Enron's archive also shows how few mailboxes it takes to tell a company's story: about 150 users, most of them senior. For a seller, that suggests leadership and project mailboxes carry more of the record than shared inboxes full of notifications, so the inventory should say which is which.4

Scrubbing

Stripping out names: the step buyers now build in

In Spirit, the ombudsman recommended approving Google's purchase on 2026-10-05 on terms where Tonic.ai strips personal details from the unstructured data and files a certification with the court before every transfer. She noted that she did not assess risks to employees or third parties, which is where most of the names in an email archive come from.5

Wind-down channels describe a similar step. SimpleClosure says each dataset has personal details stripped out before a buyer gets it, including sensitive information and credentials. Pewter, one of the buyers we work with, shows a before-and-after sample with names replaced by placeholders, so you can review the result before you sign.6,7

Smaller companies

Where a startup's mailboxes fit

SimpleClosure says code, Slack, email and docs are in scope, while sensitive employee and health records are excluded. It reports 150+ data deals for wound-down startups, typically $10K-$100K each. Cielo24's sale bundled email with 13 years of Slack and Jira and was reported at "hundreds of thousands of dollars".8,9,10

A practical order of work: keep the mail tenant paid, export with folder structure intact, list which accounts belonged to HR, legal and finance, and ask the buyer to sample before anything is wiped. aitrainer.work notes that Google Workspace, like Slack and GitHub, deletes organizations after non-payment, so a lapsed bill can end the sale before it starts. Buyers we work with take closed companies' mail too: Pewter takes US firms that are closed or winding down with 20+ full-time staff and 3+ years of records, and the match quiz shows which others fit.11,12
